Vernon W. Jewett Jr., 83, of Concord died Friday, April 10, 2009, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Manchester.
He was born Nov. 10, 1925, in Hanover to Vernon W. and Mildred A (Higgins) Jewett. The family lived in South Strafford, Vt. After proudly serving his country in the Merchant Marine during World War II, "Vern" was honorably discharged in 1946. On Jan. 24, 1947, he married Minnie (Mitzi) M. Partridge in Concord. The couple lived in South Strafford, where Vern worked in the copper mines, until they returned to Concord in 1952. Vern worked for many years as a stationary engineer at New Hampshire Hospital. He also owned and operated Jewett's Mobile Home Repair Service. He was a master electrician and master plumber. Until his retirement at age 80, Vern also enjoyed working at the Target store in Concord.
He was a fourth degree Knights of Columbus member and a Stephen minister at St. John the Evangelist Church. He was also a longtime member of Riverhill Grange.
He is survived by his four children, V. Robert (Linda) of Concord, Linda M. (Ronald) Poupore of Green Bay Wis., Gregory A. (Lynda) of Chesapeake, Va., and Steven C. (Robin) of Triangle, Va.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren (plus three soon-to-be-born great-grandchildren); a sister, Valisa (Pat) Roberts of Providence, R.I.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife and the love of his life, Mitzi; a sister, Valeda Colby; and a cousin who was more like a brother, Jameson Jewett.
Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 4 to 7 p.m. at Wendell J. Butt Funeral Home, 42 Washington St., Penacook. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, South Main Street, Concord. Interment will take place privately at the convenience of the family in Calvary Cemetery in Penacook. The family would like to thank the doctors (especially Dr. Gerald Gehr) and staff at the Manchester Veterans Affairs Medical Center for their dedication, compassion, assistance and genuine love for the veterans in their care.
